What is a Witness?

For years I struggled with what to say when someone asked me, “Why Jesus? Why do you believe in Him?” Most of the time I just said, “He died for you and me. He’s the greatest influence in my life. He’s SAVED me. He’s the Son of God. He’s AWESOME!” and then I’d continue on for a while. It was years before I realized that the four Gospels are actually witnessing accounts. Gee, why hadn’t I thought of that earlier? How simple? Just tell the story about Jesus’s life, death and resurrection.

When Matthew, Mark, Luke and John penned their accounts of Jesus’ Life and ministry, they were simply telling the story – witnessing – about what happened when Jesus came, was crucified, and resurrected. Each gospel tells that story from a unique perspective, but that’s the command we all received to spread all over the earth (Mk 16:15). Just tell the story. Simply, because without the power of the “Gospel” there is something sorely missing, called “the foundation”.

God’s Word never returns void (Isa 55:11), so we can rest assured that the simple truths of scripture will always accomplish more than we can possibly imagine. The Apostle Paul taught us in 1Cor 2:1,2 that we are not to try to think of grand things to say to people, but speak the simple truths of Christ crucified. That said, the four Gospels offer excellent examples of how to tell the story of God’s life and ministry here on earth. As for the epistles, actually, those are truly addressed to those who are already believers. It is assumed believers know and understand what Jesus taught, although many, many struggle. So, for witnessing sake, we kind of don’t want to start with the epistles.

If you have the opportunity to tell the story about Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, let ‘er rip! Don’t worry about conveying all four of the gospels to anyone. Just allow the Holy Spirit to tell your version, what you remember, as close to the truth as you can. God’ll bless ya!

Peace out!

Isa 55:11 So shall my word be that goes forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
