Demons, Fallen angels, Little gods
Since I keep referring to demons being fallen angels, I figured I’d put this post up so y’all would know where to find that in scripture. In a way, it’s another preliminary for the ongoing Hebrews study. I hope you find it helpful.
In Rev 12:3,7-10, it revealed to us that Satan is also known as the Devil, the great Red Dragon, the Serpent, and the Accuser.
Rev 12:3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great Red Dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
Rev 12:7-10 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the Dragon; and the Dragon fought and his angels, 8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great Dragon was cast out, that old Serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the Accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
Satan also has his own angels (Rev 12:9) who are in league with him. Just as Satan is a fallen angel, these “angels” in league with Satan also are “fallen angels.”
Rev 12:9 And the great Dragon was cast out, that old Serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
But that’s not all to the names in the Bible that Satan is known by. In Isa 14:5-22, Satan (the Devil, Red Dragon, Serpent, and Accuser) is also known also as “Lucifer” and in Ezek 28:11-19, as the king of Tyrus. It is in Ezek 28:14 that we specifically see where scripture shows that Satan is also a certain type of angel called “the anointed cherub.”
Ezek 28:14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
In Ezek 28:13 we learn Satan was in the Garden of Eden,
Ezek 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
And just two verses later we read how Satan was perfect in every way, until sin was found in him.
Ezek 28:15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
In Isa 14:13,14 we learn what Satan’s iniquity was: He lifted himself up to exalt his own throne above the stars of God and said he would be like the Most High (God).
Isa 14:13,14 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
When Satan fell he evidently influenced other angels to fall with him. Though many fallen angels are kept in everlasting chains by the Lord (Jd 1:5,6) until the day of judgement, a large number of fallen angels remain at large as evil workers (see demon definition below) and principalities in Satan’s realm where He yet again has another name, being known as the prince of the power of the air and god of this world.
Satan’s being called the prince of this world also reveals interesting stuff. In Daniel 10:11-13, 20,21 Michael, the archangel is also called a “prince.” In fact, those whom Michael fights against who appear to acting deities over nations are also called “princes.” Just as Michael, the good archangel of the Lord who is in charge of God’s Heavenly Host is called a “prince” it is evident that these fallen angels must be powerful since they act when good angels come into help God’s people. Again, these are fallen angels from Satan’s kingdom.
Now, there are many, but let’s look at just one of the set of scriptures which refer to “devils” and take a look at the actual meanings of the Greek words. When these say devil, they are not referring to the Devil (i.e., Satan), but to other devils.
Mat 9:32,33 As they went out, behold, they brought to Him a dumb man possessed with a devil (Gk. daimonizomai). 33 And when the devil (Gk. daimonion) was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel.
The first word devil is the Gk. word daimonizomai. It means to be exercised by a demon.
G1139. daimonizomai, dahee-mon-id’-zom-ahee; middle voice from G1142; to be exercised by a demon:–have a (be vexed with, be possessed with) devil (-s).
But it is the second devil that is the most telling… daimonion is the Gk word for a demonic being. In other words a deity (god).
G1140. daimonion, dahee-mon’-ee-on; neuter gender of a derivative of G1142; a demonic being; by extension a deity:–devil, god.
And just because it’s interesting, both of these Gk definitions point to G1142 which is daimon and flat out says a demon or supernatural spirit of a bad nature. Translation, they’re bad fallen angels.
G1142. daimon, dah’-ee-mown; from daio (to distribute fortunes); a demon or supernatural spirit (of a bad nature):–devil.
This is why angels are sometimes referred to in scripture as deities or gods such as in Gen 6:2-4; Job 1:6, 2:1; Psa 97:6-9; Heb 1:6.
It also sheds a lot of light on pagan “gods” or why anyone would ever pray to a piece of wood, or leave offerings at a statue of a deity. In other words, the false “deities” people pray to are fallen angels using the powers God gave them (to do good) for their own benefits, and do works of evil instead.
This is not unlike any king or leader who ever took what was intended for good and turned it into a perversion of that, for their own benefit. Amazingly, this is the kind of influence Satan has on so many in the world.
May God help you and increase your understanding… Peace out!!
