How God’s Light Shines in the Darkness

Greetings! I put together this little video on Jesus as the Light and the rest of this post is the accompanying scripture to substantiate all that’s contained in the video scripturally. It’s also to help my international readers to follow along. Closed Captioning is functional as of right now, but the video must be started to select the “CC” button and turn it on. If you’re an international reader, I’ve also posted a brief video on How to Select Close Caption Languages in YouTube Videos (click here) showing how to select the various languages available.

I hope you’ll take the time to watch the video (and that it blesses you). Let’s move on.

As we know from studying the Book of Job (and the processes of life itself), sometimes when we’re going through the darker times of our lives, we can become bewildered and desperate, not knowing what to do about our dilemmas. When I’ve found myself in this sort of state, I, too, have desperately grasped at God pleading He show me how His Light can continue to shine in the darkness (and thus help me get through whatever it is I’m dealing with).

The good news is God’s Light is manifestly always there even if we can’t feel or see it.

You see, our God is eternal and everlasting. Regardless of what we might see or feel from the situation at hand, Light is the one thing that never goes “out.”

We know from scripture that the true Light of God is His Word, which is Jesus Christ; Word and Truth.

Jn 1:1-5 In the beginning was the Word (Gk. Logos), and the Word (Logos) was with God, and the Word (Logos) was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In Him was Life; and the Life was the Light of men. 5 And the Light shineth in darkness;and the darkness comprehended it not.

Jesus, Himself, is the “Truth” (Jn 17:17).

Jn 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.

Jn 8:32 And ye shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall make you free.

He is also the “Light” (Isa 8:20).

Jn 1:4-5 In Him was life; and the life was the Light of men. 5 And the Light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Jn 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the Light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the Light of Life.

You see, though darkness may surround you, the Light of God still shines. Jn 1:1-5 says the “Word of God” was with God in the beginning and “all things were made by Him.”

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

This means nothing was made without Jesus.

Col 1:16-17 tells us all things were created by Him and by Him all things “consist.”

Col 1:16-17 For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him: 17 And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist (sunistao).

The Greek word for “consist” is “sunistao” and indicates all things have been introduced by Jesus. In other words, the actual “union” of its “introduction” or “constitution” is of Christ.

G4921. sunistao, soon-is-tah’-o; or (strengthened) sunistano, soon-is-tan’-o; or sunistemi, soon-is’-tay-mee; from G4862 and G2476 (including its collative forms); to set together, i.e. (by implication) to introduce (favorably), or (figurative) to exhibit; intransitive to stand near, or (figurative) to constitute:–approve, commend, consist, make, stand (with).

G4862. sun, soon; a primary preposition denoting union; with or together (but much closer than G3326 or G3844), i.e. by association, companionship, process, resemblance, possession, instrumentality, addition etc.:–beside, with. In comparative, it has similar applications, including completeness.

This means Jesus is “Creator” God (Eph 3:9).

Eph 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ.

Heb 1:2-3 tells us the Father “made the worlds” (this is plural, meaning “many” worlds) by Jesus Christ and He “upholds all things by the Word of His power.”

Heb 1:2,3 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, whom He hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds. Who being the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person, and upholding (phero) all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.

The Greek word for “upholds” is “phero” and means to “carry forth” or to “endure.”

G5342. phero, fer’-o; a primary verb (for which other and apparently not cognate ones are used in certain tenses only; namely, olo, oy’-o; and enegko, en-eng’-ko); to “bear” or carry (in a very wide application, literal and figurative, as follows): – be, bear, bring (forth), carry, come, + let her drive, be driven, endure, go on, lay, lead, move, reach, rushing, uphold.

This means that it’s because of Jesus that anything created also continues to exist because of Him.

Again, this means Jesus is God. These scriptures also substantiate the basics of the doctrine of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit all being “One.”

That means when God created the heaven and the earth (Gen 1:1-4), and darkness was upon the face of the deep, and God said Let there be Light….

Gen 1:1-4 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

…Jesus Christ (as the Word of God) was doing the saying (see Jesus as the Logos; Reasoning for more).

It also means that Jesus Christ as God and as the Light (Jn 1:4-5; 8:12; 12:35-36), has also always being the Light (Heb 13:8).

Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

You see, we know from science that the Visible Spectrum of Light only covers a few frequencies compared to the vast Electromagnetic Spectrum (EMS) of Light.

The EMS of Light contains not only the Visible Spectrum we can see with our eyes (such as the colors of this world or that which is before you), but also Radio (AM, FM) or Television waves (UHF, VHF, etc), Microwaves, Infrared, or Gamma Rays (these are all a part of Light; EMS).

Now, let me be VERY clear: I am NOT attributing that these things are “God,” but that our God IS the one who Created and who also continuously permeates all these things, (and so they can continue to “consist;” Gen 1:1-4; Jn 1:1-5; Col 1:16-17; Eph 3:9; Heb 1:2-3).

Col 1:17 And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist (sunistao).

And, since God (as Light) existed before the “Visible Spectrum of light” was actually created (Gen 1:1-4; Jn 1:1-5; Col 1:16-17; Eph 3:9; Heb 1:2-3), then it doesn’t matter what our eyes may see. It only matters what we believe, because God is intimately connected to all these things.

He truly never leaves us alone.

Heb 13:5-6 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. 6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

Darkness, then, is a matter of understanding and perception.

Though it most certainly can frighten you, touch you, overcome or overwhelm you, it’s power is illusion.

Jesus truly has conquered it all.

Jn 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Indeed, we are a church raised to believe in “parables,” and God has created a gigantic one of witness all around us that cannot be denied.

Therefore, GOD’S LIGHT WILL ALWAYS CONTINUES TO SHINE and darkness cannot possibly overcome it. Even if there were no sun to shine anymore, God’s light will still permeate the universe.

Jn 1:1-10 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In Him was Life; and the Life was the Light of men. 5 And the Light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not.
